The Institut de Recherche en Santé, de Surveillance Epidémiologique et de Formation (IRESSEF) is a research and training institution based in Diamniadio, Dakar-Senegal. Founded by Professor Souleymane Mboup, this institute ambitions to be a high profile and internationally renowned health research and training platform, with expertise and state-of-the art equipment, to promote high quality research and training in Africa.

Research activities at IRESSEF evolve around several platforms:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Virology
  • Bacteriology
  • Immunology
  • Clinical trial
  • Biostatistics
  • Socio-anthropology
  • Malaria

The Laboratory of Malaria at IRESSEF has a long experience in malaria-related research activities. It has developed an extensive expertise in Plasmodium falciparum sample collection, molecular biology, in vitro culture, immunology and sequencing over a decade. The laboratory also collaborates with international partners from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and from the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston with significant expertise in population genetics and invasion.

Locally, existing collaboration with MRC the Gambia, Waccbip in Ghana and the Mauritania are ongoing. We study drug resistance, invasion pathway and immunity in Plasmodium. We also study P. falciparum population diversity. We supervise both Masters and PhD students.
